Summary Naomi Klein is an award-winning journalist, syndicated columnist and author of the New York Times and international bestseller, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. Published worldwide in September 2007, The Shock Doctrine is being translated into 20 languages to date. The six minute companion film, created by Alfonso Cuaron, director of Children of Men, was an Official Selection of the 2007 Venice Biennale and Toronto International Film Festivals and was a viral phenomenon, downloaded over a million times.

Following Naomi Klein's reception and book signing, come and see 'Our Daily Bread' in McConomy, 9:00 PM:

If you've ever had to defend your eating or food-shopping habits to those that raise a cynical eye to the terms "organic," "healthy" or "fair trade," you will not want to miss this film. Nor should you let your critics miss it either. Director Nikolaus Geyrhalter kneads together a collection of documentary footage from European countries. Images of crowded cows, cramped chickens, sprayers, spritzers and pickers are but a few of the seeds he plants for the viewer to cultivate and digest independently. We are what we eat, but what are we eating? When did nourishment become so mechanized? Humans are inventive and creative beings, but when does a machine cease to be an innovation and become a harmful or inhumane excess? "Our Daily Bread" is a speechless forum that will leave you equally without words the next time you face a food aisle. Take time after the film to taste the importance of tradition. Allegro Hearth Bakery of Squirrel Hill will generously provide your daily slice of bread, hummus and cheeses prepared without the poking and prodding of mysterious mechanizations.
