About Us |
The Activities Board is the primary
event programming organization at Carnegie Mellon University. We are a
student-led organization formed by the Student Senate and charged
with providing a breadth of programming to the campus
community. We provide the campus with year-round films,
concerts, speakers, comedians, publications, technical
assistance, and special events. We strive
to reach a broad set of students with our programming
choices as well as provide quality entertainment on campus.
According to our Constitution (viewable here), AB's function areas are broken down as follows:
| Comedy
AB Comedy is dedicated to bringing Carnegie Mellon University the very best in comedy. There are two acts each year (one per semester), for which the comedians are hand picked by our chairs, primped, paid, and set at liberty to perform, much to the enjoyment, or chagrin, of the CMU community (for instances of chagrin, see Matt in Business/Finance). |
| Concerts
AB Concerts is a student driven organization with four distinct branches: Skibo, Underground, Coffeehouse, and Concerts. Skibo typically books small or solo music acts in the Skibo Coffeehouse. Underground typically books music acts on Friday nights in the campus eatery of the same name in Morewood's basement.
Coffeehouse books nationally touring acts from many different genres in various locations on campus. There are no constants within Coffeehouse, but you can expect approximately three shows per semester from this group.
Concerts puts on two large-scale shows; one in the Fall and one around Carnival in the Spring. With the largest budget, Concerts strives to bring acts that are popular in a Top 40 kind of way.

| Films
AB Films is a student run organization with an aim to provide students to see films as an alternative to going to commercial theatres or renting films for private home screenings. AB Films screens films four days a week (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday) and, on average, three screenings per night. Genres range from artistic/independent films to mainstream/blockbuster films.

| Lectures
Lectures brings speakers of a variety of
backgrounds to campus.

| Readme
readme, founded in 1895, was the world's first satire magazine.
Hostilely taken over by AB in the mid 80's, it now publishes the best in satire, helpful true articles, and events weekly.

| Special Events
Special Events sponsors the bold, the strange, and the cool. We do anything and everything that doesn't fall under any other category, so we make our own. Our popular events include Geek Week and Sex Week. Soon we will run Winterfest and Fiesta de Primavera, the end of semester parties that make the whole semester worthwhile.

| Tech
AB Tech is the student organization charged with
handling the technical production aspects of all Activities
Board sponsored events. In addition, the committee provides
professional-quality sound reinforcement and lighting production
at heavily subsidized rates to the Carnegie Mellon community. For more info check out http://www.abtech.org. |
